Scheduling an Assembly

Slide Show

Dear Educators ~

Welcome to Alaska Husky Spirt! This captivating presentation has earned top ratings by teachers, principals and students and been described as “the best our school has ever had!”. I’ve seen the students wide eyed with excitement and interest and richly motivated by the sled dogs, mushing and learning about the Alaskan lifestlye. This is my 11th year doing school assemblies and I think I’ve hit the right frequency students understand that inspires diversity, curiosity and a true appreciation for animals and our connection to the wilderness. More importantly sharing that “personal success” is achieved on many levels; that we each have unique strengths and paths and having the fortitude to broaden horizons and follow your heart is the message woven into this exciting assembly.

Scheduling currently under way for December 2007 - April 2008 I look forward to hearing from you and bringing a bit of my world to your students.

Sled Dogs – Slide Show – CNN Video – Gear – Anecdotal Lecture – Q & A’S

Life!

Lorraine and two of her Alaskan sled dogs present a comprehensive overview of dog mushing in Alaska; what it has been to Alaskans historically, culturally and what it has become today with sport/hobby mushing. As fun as it is informative, this multifaceted experience includes a professional power point show with exquisite photos capturing the excitement and beauty of mushing dogs in Alaska's scenic back country and the world famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

A 23 year Alaskan resident, Lorraine shares slices of life and the needed diversity that goes with living in the small Alaskan town that media commentator and former Homer resident Tom Bodett calls "the end of the road”. Students see a short video filmed by CNN shown worldwide that captures Lorraine driving her team across a glacier, a rewarding experience of turning sport and hobby into a unique business.

Actual dog mushing gear demonstrated includes boots, parka, beaver “musher's hat”, dog booties, gangline,  snow hook, harnesses and an actual dog sled along with 2 featured guests from Lorraine’s team. “Buckeye” who has run in the team for 10 years and is now helping to share the Husky Spirit as more of a pet dog and his offspring and 2 year old “Cabo” who comes from the lineage of a winning Iditarod lead dog. She is affectionately referred to as the “wild-child”! She has the unique chatacteristic of one blue eye and one brown..

Along with lessons in animal husbandry, Alaskan climate, geography, history, geology, flora/fauna and the fascinating sport of mushing, are strong motivational messages. Students see the value of teamwork and boundless adventure; that patience, faith and perseverance help achieve personal goals. Most importantly, the understanding that "success " is achieved in many ways .

There are many paths to follow . . .
